Melting of Antarctica is speeding up, worrying scientists

WASHINGTON: A massive new learn about unearths that Antarctica is melting at an accelerating price, with about 3 trillion tons of ice disappearing since 1992.

Scientists from world wide calculate that in the closing quarter century, the southern-most continent's ice sheet melted into enough water to hide Texas to a depth of nearly 13 ft (4 meters).

The learn about says that from 1992 to 2011, Antarctica lost nearly 84 billion tons of ice a year (76 billion metric tons). From 2012 to 2017, the melt price higher to greater than 241 billion tons a year (219 billion metric tons).

The learn about in Wednesday's magazine Nature is part of a world effort to assess inclined ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland, which can be key indicators of local weather trade.
