NEW DELHI: Facing public anger against the proposed felling of hundreds of trees within the capital, the Centre on Thursday said not more trees can be cut for redevelopment of the seven govt colonies which have been the objective of chipko-like protests from green activists.
The two building agencies of the federal government — National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC)and Central Public Works division (CPWD) — will rework the layout design to steer clear of cutting down trees, it said.
“It was once determined at a gathering that no giant tree will be cut. Small trees will be transplanted and more than a million trees planted by different agencies all over this monsoon,” housing and concrete affairs secretary Durga Shankar Mishra said, including that the verdict were taken in view of public concerns. The trees to be planted may not be saplings but of 8-12 ft height, the federal government said.
