NEW DELHI: Facing public anger in opposition to the proposed felling of hundreds of timber in the capital, the Centre on Thursday mentioned not more timber could be minimize for redevelopment of the seven govt colonies which were the target of chipko-like protests from green activists.


The two building agencies of the federal government — National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and Central Public Works department (CPWD) — will rework the layout design to steer clear of cutting down timber, it mentioned.


“It was once decided at a meeting that no giant tree shall be minimize. Small timber shall be transplanted and greater than a million timber planted by way of other agencies all over this monsoon,” housing and concrete affairs secretary Durga Shankar Mishra mentioned, including that the verdict have been taken in view of public concerns. The timber to be planted will not be saplings however of Eight-12 ft height, the federal government mentioned.


Housing and concrete affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri promptly tweeted, “I have always maintained that the fairway quilt in Delhi will not be broken and steps taken to reinforce it further... no tree will henceforth be minimize in the strategy of redevelopment of Delhi colonies.”
