GUWAHATI: The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM), an umbrella group of the state's more than a few indigenous and tribal communities, reiterated its call for on Tuesday that the overall draft of National Register of Citizen (NRC) will have to include handiest the names of indigenous other people of the state.
The ASM stated it feared that if the overall draft comprises names of those that had come to the state for work and different functions after 1951, it might now not serve the 'real function of identifying outsiders'.
"If the NRC is updated on the basis of the cutoff date of 1971, we fear that around 70 lakh outsiders living in Assam may become citizens of the country. It may lead to a conflicting situation among the indigenous community of the state and others residing here," running president of ASM Matiur Rahman alleged.
In February, the ASM and a number of other different organizations representing more than a few indigenous communities from Assam had shot a petition letter to the Chief Justice of India, inquiring for his intervention to briefly halt the continuing update means of the NRC till a petition filed via ASM difficult the Constitutional validity of Section 6 (A) of the Citizenship Act is resolved.
ASM's petition opposed that Section 6 (A) of the Citizenship Act, incorporated as an modification following the Assam Accord of 1985, is unconstitutional. The modification enabled granting of citizenship to all migrants from Bangladesh who came to Assam till the middle of the night of March 24, 1971, whilst the point in time for the rest of the country is July 19, 1948.
Rahman wondered, "While the matter is still pending, how is the updating of the NRC on the basis of 1971 cut-off date valid?" He stated the ASM expects that a constitutional bench will take up the matter from July 15. Terming the following ultimate NRC draft a 'death warrant' for the folk of the state, the Mahasangha alleged that the NRC can turn the indigenous other people of the state right into a minority.
The first draft of NRC was once launched on December 31 remaining year with names of a minimum of 1.9 crore other people out of three.29 crore applicants. The ultimate draft of NRC is slated to be launched on June 30.
