Small scale industries suffer Rs 10 crore loss due to flood

MANGALURU: Heavy rainfall and the next artificial floods on May 29 have brought about losses to the level of a whopping Rs 10 crore to small-scale and medium-scale industries in the district.
Gaurav Hegde, president of Kanara Small Industries Association, has shot a letter to leader minister H D Kumaraswamy, soliciting for the state govt to bail out marketers whose companies were severely affected because of the devastation.

“The SME sector is facing numerous hardship because of demonetisation and implementation of GST. This natural calamity has given a big blow to those industries. We request your good self to assist marketers who suffered because of this natural disaster, via giving compensation to recuperate from these losses, which some industries may not be able to restart,” the letter learn.


According to the letter, a replica of which is with the TOI, Hegde has mentioned a minimum of 50-60 industries had been inundated via flood water to a level of 2-Four ft, resulting in huge injury to raw materials, finished goods, packaging materials, machines, motors, electric panels and transformer structural injury. Most of those industries are situated on the Baikampady Industrial Area.


Hegde also mentioned the rain that lasted for a few hours, has stopped manufacturing from taking place from two to 20 days. A workforce from the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board, Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd and Mangaluru City Corporation had not too long ago visited the industries to assess the losses.


The letter has also drawn the eye of the manager minister towards the issues in stormwater drains.
