Mangaluru: In the wake of the hijab row that rocked St Agnes College early this week with some students protesting for their proper to wear hijab in study rooms, the college control clarified that the problem was raked up unnecessarily via outsiders. “The students are proud of the foundations of the college,’’ stated M Jeswina, predominant of the college,” here on Friday.
Addressing the media to explain at the factor following rumours on social media, Jeswina stated that the dress code regulation of the establishment states that students must wear the uniform prescribed via the college. “No different attire is allowed within the faculty premises all the way through faculty hours. No scholar will wear a headscarf. Students will not duvet their faces or wear any attire apart from the prescribed faculty uniform within the campus. This rule is prevalent from several years. During admission, oldsters and students from the community are trained about it, and they agree to adhere to it. Those who can not observe (laws) don’t take admission to the college. Admissions are made simplest at the foundation of the ones regulations among different necessities,’’ she stated.

About 28 in line with cent of scholars learning within the faculty are Muslims.

“Over the years the college has made clear the foundations and regulations including the dress code within the manual to handle discipline, uniformity and transparency. This has been adopted via all students,” the predominant pointed out.

Jeswina stated that on Monday, one of the vital students, along side some strangers, protested in entrance of the college gate. When the scholars had been questioned, Jeswina stated that they advised her that they had been instigated via the Campus Front of India discussion board to protest towards the foundations and norms of the college.

“I wish to make it clear that no school has ever touched the scarf or the body of any scholar at any time. No scholar has been suspended from the college after the incident. In fact, all of the students who protested, especially Fathima Anis Sheikh , the 3rd 12 months B.Com scholar who spoke to the media, was present within the class the very subsequent day (Tuesday) and are proceeding to wait categories. On Wednesday, all the ones students who went on a protest with out prior intimation, had been requested to give an explanation in writing within the presence of their oldsters within three days. The faculty has not taken any signature from any scholar on any clean paper,” she maintained.

Misguided, says scholar’s father

Anis, father of Fathima, speaking on behalf of his daughter stated that she was instigated via participants of CFI and is innocent. “I’m related to the college from the past 25 years and in excellent faith I've despatched my daughter to study here. If any staff has a topic with the college, they must speak about it with the management, and not protest. My daughter was pushed into the talk and she holds nothing towards the college as well as the foundations,” he added.

Naureen, vice-president of the college, stated that she was added to a WhatsAapp staff called ‘Justice for Scarf and Namaz’ and when she left staff, she was threatened thru calls.

Jeswina additionally added that she feared for her students’ and has requested for police safety.

Past issues


In August 2016, round 100 male students of Dr Ok Shivarama Karanth Government First Grade College in Bellare wore saffron shawls over their shirts for several days as a mark of protest. Their argument: we can proceed wearing saffron shawls until the predominant takes action towards students who wear hijab in class.

In 2009, controversy erupted at SVS College in Bantwal, when students were not authorised to wear a headscarf in class.
