HYDERABAD: Two minor girls, who had been about to be married off, have been rescued over the past 24 hours from within sight Yadadri district, police said on Thursday.
Following data that the ladies elderly 15 and 16 had been to be married off, 'SHE Teams', a wing of the state police, stopped the weddings in Bibi Nagar and Pochampally mandals and counselled the parents of the ladies and the bridegrooms, police commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said. The 15-year-old used to be to marry a 26-year-old man the day past while the 16-year-old used to be to get married to a 22-year-old this morning, but the plan used to be thwarted, Bhagwat said.
The police official appealed to the general public in opposition to appearing marriages for minors below the stipulated age and said it used to be against the law. Issuing a caution to the clergymen, wedding card printers, elders and supporters of kid marriage, Bhagwat said the parents of such youngsters could be held accountable for this kind of marriages.
Further, he said the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 could be invoked at the oldsters of such minors and if found guilty, the elders would face a minimum two years imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh.
