Water off Karwar’s coast turns black

KARWAR: Dozens of other people grew to become out to catch a glimpse of the Arabian Sea off Karwar coast on Thursday after the water grew to become black. This rare phenomenon was once first noticed by means of morning joggers at the seaside. As the news unfold, a large number of other people rushed to the seaside to witness the ‘black sea’.

“We found the sea tough and the water had grew to become black,” one jogger said. “Normally, the water is blue. This is truly a rare phenomenon.”

Many fishermen too said they haven’t observed anything else somewhat adore it. “We aren't allowed to fish in mid-sea till July 31as the federal government has banned fishing for 2 months,” one fisherman said. “We have no idea whether or not this black water has unfold to mid-sea or is limited to the world close to the shore.”

Scientists at Karnataka University’s department of research in marine biology (DSMB) in Karwar, who've accumulated samples of the water, said it was once a natural phenomenon and there is not any wish to fear. Prof Jagannath Rathod, head of DSMB, said heavy rain during the last four days in the district is the motive.

“Rainwater which flows into streams and rivers carried with it natural waste from forests,” Rathod said. “The river water flows into the sea and decomposed natural waste like leaves of bushes have mixed with sea water. Since the sea is unstable, this waste is being washed to the shore and that's the reason why the water seems to be black when one sees it from the seaside.”

Scientists said another reason is dredging paintings at Karwar port house carried out six months in the past. About 17 lakh cubic meters of silt was once got rid of and dumped mid-sea, about 25 nautical miles away from Karwar shore. Rathod said the silt mixed with the tough sea water, resulting in a metamorphosis in the color of the water. “This color can be observed till Polem seaside in Goa adjacent to Karwar seaside,” Rathod said.
