WhatsApp shares limited data of payment service with FB

NEW DELHI: Popular messaging app WhatsApp has claimed it shares restricted knowledge of payment carrier with its mum or dad company Facebook and the social media major does not use the ideas for business objective.

"Facebook does not use WhatsApp payment information for commercial purposes, it simply helps pass the necessary payment information to the bank partner and NPCI. In some cases, we may share limited data to help provide customer support to you or keep payments safe and secure," WhatsApp claimed on its website.

WhatsApp is running beta model of its payment carrier in India.

According to executive resources, the ministry of electronics and IT has written to National Payment Corporation of India to ensure compliance around WhatsApp payment and test if WhatsApp is sharing knowledge with its mum or dad company Facebook.

The ministry has requested NPCI to ensure compliance of WhatsApp payment it scales up its carrier.

WhatsApp on its website stated that once a consumer makes a payment, the mobile messaging app creates the important connection between the sender and recipient of the payment, using Facebook infrastructure.

"We pass the transaction information to the bank partner, which is called a PSP (payment service provider), and to NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India), so they can facilitate the movement of funds between the sender's and receiver's bank accounts," the website stated.


When contacted, WhatsApp spokesperson stated, "Facebook processes UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transaction data as a service provider for WhatsApp, and does not use WhatsApp payments transaction data for commercial purposes."


The IT ministry has expressed concern around knowledge protection of Facebook customers in India following knowledge leak from its platform to Cambridge Analytica. The ministry on June 7 again issued to Facebook looking for explanation on stories that it shared knowledge of customers with tool makers.


WhatsApp claimed that it also does not store any delicate payment knowledge such as one-time password ship for the transaction, account quantity or complete debit card details.


"Today, almost 1 million people are testing WhatsApp payments in India. The feedback has been very positive. People enjoy the convenience of sending money as simply and securely as they send messages. We're working closely with NPCI and multiple banks including our payment service providers to expand the feature to more people and support India's digital economy," the spokesperson stated.
