BENGALURU: Two patients from Kerala, suffering from serious lung issues, underwent bilateral (double) lung transplants in Bengaluru. The first recipient, Sudhish MV, a development employee from Thrissur, underwent the surgical treatment on June 12 at Narayana Health. The 2nd, a 61-year-old male patient, was operated at BGS Global Gleneagles Hospital, Bengaluru, on Wednesday evening.
Sudhish, 28, who was bedridden for years, has now got a contemporary hire of existence. He got the organs from a brain-dead patient, whose lungs, however, had been intact.
In the senior citizen’s case, the lungs of a braindead patient from Mysuru had been harvested and brought to the Bengaluru unit of the health facility for transplant. The surgical treatment was achieved by a crew of doctors headed by Dr Sandeep Attavar, director of middle failure and transplant programme and Dr Vijil Rahulan, HOD, transplant pulmonologist, BGS Global Gleneagles Hospital.
Dr Julius Punnen, middle and lung transplant surgeon, Narayana Health, who operated on Sudhish said the pride of a a hit transplant is immense. “Lung transplant is an excessively complicated surgical treatment. Those with lung issues looking ahead to a transplant are restricted to bed and want consistent oxygen toughen. They can’t even transfer round. For a surgeon, a a hit lung transplant stays very enough. In fact, not like different organs, the functioning of lungs can't be aided by extended exterior toughen and a transplant turns into essential. In this case, we needed to transplant no longer one but each the lungs, making the case the entire more difficult,” said Dr Punnen, including Sudhish is the primary recipient of double lungs in Karnataka.
“After a protracted battle with infections and repeated hospitalisations, I’m ready to respire alone. I will now lead a standard existence and with a bit of luck get back to work,” said Sudhish, who suffered from critical bronchiectasis, an infection he reduced in size as a child, which resulted in lung failure.
Interestingly, Thannal, a Kerala-based NGO, raised finances for Sudhish via crowdfunding, using a video explaining his situation. While lungs transplant most often prices Rs 15 lakh, Sudhish was charged Rs 5 lakh.
PROTECTED IN LAYERS
Once harvested, the lungs are full of oxygen and stored in a four-layer bag. While the primary layer contains the lungs, the second layer protecting it's empty. The 3rd layer contains perfadex, a protective solution. This is additional stored in the ice bag. Unlike in case of middle transplant, lungs may also be transplanted inside Eight-12 hours of them being harvested. Hence, there is not any urgency to create inexperienced corridors to transport the organ
