Arbitration may help reduce backlog of pending cases: Justice Kurian Joseph

SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh Judicial Academy will have to be developed as a world centre on arbitration and mediation, Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph said here on Saturday.
The judge was once addressing the state's judicial officers after inaugurating an administrative block, a body of workers hostel and body of workers quarters below the first segment of development on the HPJA in Ghandal, about 30 km from here.

On the sidelines of the development, Justice Joseph told PTI that other ways of dispute answer like arbitration and mediation may play a very important position in lowering the backlog of pending circumstances within the nation.

He also advocated putting in new courts and appointment of extra judges to deal with the pendency of circumstances.

Nearly 2.75 crore circumstances are pending in courts around the nation, in line with the National Judicial Data Grid.

Justice Joseph and 3 other Supreme Court judges - J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi and Madan B Lokur - had caused a controversy in January by conserving a press convention concentrated on Chief Justice Dipak Misra's style of functioning.

Justice Joseph, who was once the Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice before his elevation to the Supreme Court, also chaired a colloquium on 'Judicial Ethics and Accountability'.


Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the first segment of development at HPJA has been done in one of these approach that it will develop into a tourist spot in the future.
