Non-citizens will create problem in Assam: Centre tells SC

GUWAHATI: The centre on Thursday advised a bench of Supreme Court hearing the updating of the National Register of Citizens of 1951 in Assam that the excluded people would create regulation and order disturbances after the draft register is published. The workout is being undertaken to display screen unlawful Bangladeshi settlers in the state,

Centre's worry arises from the truth that documents on the subject of parental linkages shown through 47 lakh persons who have carried out for inclusion in their names in the NRC to establish that they've settled in India ahead of the cutoff date of March 25, 1971 (as determined in Assam Accord of 1985) have been found to be suspicious. Another 29 lakh persons, all married girls, have submitted gram panchayat certificate as their citizenship evidence, however the Gauhati high court had previous ruled these certificate can't be the principle citizenship report but is also offered only as a supporting report.

The bench of Ranjan Gogoi and Rohington Fali Nariman after hearing lawyer general of India KK Venugopal's competition stated that it does not see any causes for a regulation and order breakdown because the names of the folks in these two classes will not be integrated in the draft NRC to be published on December 31 but at a later date only after their verification is done.

"We do not see how the aforesaid situation can even remotely arise as we have already indicated in the earlier part of the present order that claims of 47 lakh persons and 29 lakh persons are still pending and would be subject to verification and covered by publication of another draft NRC at a subsequent point of time," the court stated in its order.
