MUMBAI: A dozen groups will audit all structures passing over railway tracks from Friday, a joint BMC-railways effort following Tuesday's Andheri over-bridge collapse that injured five.
The BMC and railways determined to collaborate on forming the groups in addition to a coordination committee to hold a joint assembly once a month to iron out overlapping issues. Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta said there have been 445 bridges passing over railway tracks, all of which would be audited. "In case of those requiring immediate action, work on repairs or maintenance of it would be started," he said.
The BMC provides the railways finances to repair its bridges that pass over tracks. There have been talks on streamlining the cash supply by way of forming a corpus fund for urgent necessities, said Western Railway leader PRO Ravinder Bhakar.
"To ensure that there is no scope for delay in carrying out repair works, it was suggested that the possibility of creating a corpus fund of appropriate amount may be explored," said Bhakar. "This would ensure that sufficient funds are always available for carrying out the urgent repair works without any delays."
Bhakar said the 445 structures known can be audited within 4 months.
"It was also decided to take up the repair or reconstruction, as need be, of the stressed bridges on priority without procedural delays," he said. "The assessment of the oldest bridges will be given priority."
Railway officials additionally requested the municipal corporation to hold out a force for the removing of encroachments over pedestrian pathways on bridges because it contributes to corrosion of the structure.
CR leader PRO Sunil Udasi said previous bridges like Lokmanya Tilak Bridge and Elphinstone Bridge can be taken up first for the audit. "For better coordination, such joint meetings will be held every month on a particular day in which joint decisions will be taken by senior engineers from BMC and railways," Udasi said.
