Drug abuse: This July, Punjabi University comes up with 1-year course on counselling for Substance abuse and treatment

PATIALA: At a time when the state govt is all ready with the death sentence for the primary time convicts in drug abuse the Punjabi University had started a one year distance training direction over the drug abuse and counselling to make school kids aware about the sick effects of drugs intake and it provide at the very early teen age.

The college government claimed this can be a first-ever direction in the northern-India and it would allow the graduates to take part. Starting from this July, the direction 'Counselling for Substance abuse prevention and remedy' is noticed as a welcome step for the teachers in colleges and colleges.

The students in the direction can be educated by way of psychiatrists, medical doctors, social workers, professors and different students even though preference can be given to college having background in psychology. The students would even have activity alternatives and can also be recruited as counsellors and others personnel wanted at de-addiction centres.

"There has been a lot of hue and cry over the rise in drug abuse among the adolescents in Punjab. After a long discussion, it was opined that the knowledge should be imparted to the children in the schools before they enter into teen age. The teens are at high risk and vulnerable as they can easily be trapped into the drugs. The focus may also be laid that the students in colleges and schools are taught about the consequences of both the consumption and supplying of drugs. The decision was taken to come up with such a course so that drug menace in the state can be countered. Earlier there were hurdles to get the course clear from the UGC but later the Punjabi University got autonomous powers. Now university can decide on its own to start or shut down any course", stated, professor Naina, coordinator of the direction.

She added, "The one-year post-graduate diploma will be provided through distance education. This would not only generate employment opportunities but also provide students with certificates."


The students here can be imparted coaching relating to de-addiction and the syllabus and module of the direction has been ready.


Notably, the college had already taken an initiative by way of giving coaching to university students to warn young people about the damaging effects of drugs. The college students are collaborating in the peer groups made by way of the police underneath the state govt initiative to get knowledge of the provision chain and also educate the early life from the young contributors of peer groups to avoid drugs intake.


Earlier the direction was once available at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
