Tirupur: The geology and mining division has allayed the fears of residents of Pachapalayam close to Vellakoil by means of clarifying that the hot inspection to set up an iron ore mine in the village by means of a central executive enterprise was a routine procedure.
State regulation and mining minister C Ve Shanmugam also said in the assembly that the federal government had not given any popularity of putting in a mine at Pachapalayam. The minister gave this reply to a question raised by means of Kangeyam MLA U Thaniyarasu on the issue.
A crew from Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL), a central executive enterprise headquartered at Mangaluru, has inspected the iron ore web page at Tirumankaradu close to Poosarivalasu of Pachapalayam Panchayat in June. The inspection created fear some of the residents as they assumed that the iron ore mine could be established.
V N Moorthi, a farmer from Olapalayam said, “We heard that KIOCL has earmarked about 100 sqkm for the undertaking, and it is likely that if the mine is established, they might drill or detonate the earth for hundreds of metres. It would impact the groundwater desk and the ecology.”
With minimal water sources supplied via Parambikulam Aliyar Project and Lower Bhavani Project irrigation schemes, the people listed here are taken with agriculture. If the undertaking comes up, agriculture may well be in threat, he said.
Many villagers have been nervous that they may be pressured to leave their lands and lose their livelihood. “Most of them at Poosarivalasu are agricultural labourers and they do not have any homes instead of their houses. If we would be evicted, our lives can be at risk,” said N Shanmugam, a resident.
When contacted, a senior reliable related to the geology and mining division told TOI: “KIOCL has carried out a routine survey as assigned by means of the National Mineral Exploration Trust to replace concerning the iron ore sources in its knowledge financial institution. The iron ore web page at Tirumankaradu has been demarcated as earlier as in pre-independence length. It has also featured in P Krishnasami Ayyangar’s guide - India’s Mineral Resources.”
Emphasizing that the people needn't to fret about it, the reliable said, “The purity of the iron ore at Tirumankaradu was only about 30% not like at the mines set up at Jamshedpur and Ballari, where the purity is around 80-95%. So, there is no chance for the central executive to establish a mine at Tirumankaradu. The state executive has not given any licence either. But the updating of the information financial institution on the minerals is important for the rustic’s planning.”
