Monsoon arrives, but cleaning of drains yet to start in Patiala

PATIALA: Monsoons have knocked on the door and the corporation is concerned over the cleaning of drains. Last year, the federal government introduced a venture to scrub the drains with the assistance of suction machines. However, the venture got scrapped after the machines sought may just no longer be supplied to the corporation.

It was a pilot venture in the state and its success would have decided the fate of different districts because it was proposed that around 25 such machines can be supplied across the state. However, it could no longer reach Patiala where choti nadi, badi nadi, and the Jacob drain faces blockade right through rains and needs an urgent cleaning.

Inaugurated in June closing year by cupboard minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, the super suction device (SSM) was supposed to scrub the choked and blocked sewerage and the drains as smartly. The first ever suction device was introduced in to Patiala from Pune to scrub the seasonal drains.

For the previous couple of decades, the management started disbursing the sewerage water into those seasonal drains but the similar were not wiped clean and de-silted. In 2004, to curb the casualties and sicknesses, the federal government coated the 18-feet broad Jacob drain with a concrete sheet.

Executive engineer Suresh Kumar, Patiala municipal corporation stated, "We have started cleaning the sewerage to tackle with the rainwater. More than 80 percent work of cleaning of sewerage in the city has been completed with the help of super suction machines."
