NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday sought to allay fears expressed via some members of the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library (NMML) Society, together with senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, that the proposed museum for all Prime Ministers of India within the NMML advanced would dilute Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy and clarified that additional accountability of administering the new construction would lie with NMML.
Though a suggestion to amend the memorandum of affiliation (MoA) to bring readability to NMML's role used to be put up at the annual normal body meeting chaired via home minister Rajnath Singh, objections raised via Congress members together with Kharge and Jairam Ramesh led Singh to direct recirculation of the concept note for the ex-PM's memorial looking for feedback over the next one month. The home minister, who insisted on 'consensus', said NMML Society could meet once more once the feedback were in. Additional accountability of administering over the new construction could be given to NMML after the MoA is amended.
The other attendees at Thursday's AGM integrated tradition minister Mahesh Sharma, senior Congress leader Karan Singh, minister of state for external affairs M J Akbar, NMML director Shakti Sinha and NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy.
During the meeting, the Congress members reiterated their objection to the proposal to enlarge NMML's ambit to include showcasing of works and legacy of all Indian PMs along with Nehru, arguing that it might dilute the latter's legacy and transcend the NMML's mandate as defined within the MoA.
Kharge reportedly insisted that the very nomenclature of NMML is also modified if the advanced at Teen Murti used to be to show off the legacy of all Prime Ministers. Government representatives, on the other hand, confirmed there could be no trade in NMML's name.
