Rail users want Podanur and Peelamedu stns developed

Coimbatore: While welcoming railways minister Piyush Goyal’s announcement to develop the Coimbatore North station, rail users want Podanur and Peelamedu stations also to be evolved. They say only a multi-pronged manner can decongest the Coimbatore Junction, which will get crowded all the way through peak hours.
Railway users say the federal government will have to consider trifurcating the Coimbatore Junction by means of developing Coimbatore North and Peelamedu stations. “If the entire seven to 8 trains that terminate at Coimbatore Junction forestall at Coimbatore North and Peelamedu, many of us would detrain at those stations and don't need to shuttle until the junction,” said RAAC Raveendran, who took the issue to Union minister of state for finance Pon Radhakrishnan on Wednesday.

“While Nilgiris Express and Cheran Express forestall at Coimbatore North, they may be able to forestall at Peelamedu too,” he said. “This transfer could lend a hand commuters from Peelamedu to Neelambur to board the trains at Peelamedu.”

Southern railways could also go away a few trains from Coimbatore North and Podanur stations. “Trains heading to Kerala can go away from Coimbatore North station and forestall at the junction for 3 to five minutes,” said C M Jayaraman of Citizen’s Voice Club.

“Similarly, trains to Bengaluru, Chennai and Trichy can go away from Podanur and forestall for a reasonable amount of time at the junction. This will permit Podanur to get good visitors. Residents of Vellalore, Nanjundapuram, Chettipalayam and Kurichi may even have get admission to to many trains and avoid travelling to the Coimbatore Junction,” he said.

Activists say the Coimbatore Junction is working out of space and including extra trains goes to additional burden the terminus. “Facilities like water washing and maintenance are available in Podanur and Coimbatore North stations. They simply want to be renovated,” said some other person M Ravi.

“They can create extra space at Coimbatore North station by means of doing away with some godowns and sheds,” said Raveendran. “If Coimbatore North is renovated, residents from Ramnagar, Saibaba Colony, R S Puram, Thudiyalur and Kavundampalayam can take trains from there,” said Jayaraman
