SAD meet emphasizes on Panthic identity

JALANDHAR: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) needs to remain steadfast in its Panthic identification and its core constituency. This was emphasized by way of lots of the birthday celebration speakers on the assembly of the Jalandhar district rural unit here on Friday.
The local unit of the birthday celebration also raised the problem of moving of Birs of Guru Granth Sahib from a gurdwara constructed alongside a samadh (tomb) in Kalgidhar Avenue area in Jalandhar Cantonment constituency and claimed that it amounted to interference in Sikh non secular affairs by way of the ruling Congress.

It is learnt that the local SAD leaders had won directions from the birthday celebration office in Chandigarh to lift the problem of moving of Birs from the gurdwara into a major controversy as the world falls in the constituency of Congress MLA Pargat Singh. The land the place the gurdwara is positioned also belongs to his family.

“The commonplace chorus in the assembly was that SAD must remain steadfast in its Panthic identification and issues. We are certain to lift issues concerning the Sikh community as birthday celebration has always remained the political consultant of the Panth,” said SAD MLA and district unit (rural) president Gurpartap Singh Wadala.

Referring to the problem of moving of Birs from the gurdwara at Kalgidhar Avenue, he said the Congress must no longer intervene in Sikh non secular issues.

Former Akali MLA Sarabjeet Singh Makkar, who misplaced the remaining election to Pargat, mainly focused on the issue of moving of the gurdwara and said it was very unlucky. However, he said they'd follow the directive of the Akal Takht or Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on the issue.

While the SAD is raking up the problem, Pargat said the Birs of Guru Granth Sahib were shifted to the main gurdwara in Mithapur village as the Akal Takht had directed that these must no longer be saved at a samadh and the SGPC had given a decision of 1 gurdwara in a single village.

“We just adopted the Akal Takht and SGPC directives and there was no mala fide intent in doing so. They are politicizing the problem even though that intended going against the Akal Takht directive or SGPC’s personal marketing campaign. They must a minimum of watch for the findings of the SGPC panel before raking it up only for their political ends,” said the Congress MLA.

“It actually displays the desperation of the SAD leaders after shedding the Panthic flooring as they cared little for issues concerning Sikhs or Sikhism,” he said.
