Weak monsoon in June-July worries Odisha government

BHUBANESWAR: Weak monsoon has led to much less rainfall in the state in June-July. The state has witnessed 30% less-than-normal rainfall between June 1 and July 6, stated the weatherman.
Deputy reduction commissioner Prabhat Mohapatra stated four districts have gained not up to 50% rainfall in comparison to traditional. The districts are Kalahandi, Angul, Nabarangpur and Balangir.

He stated the state gained a mean rainfall of 161.1 mm in opposition to the traditional 216.5 mm in June. Similarly, it has gained 35.5 mm rainfall from July 1 to six in opposition to the common of 65.8mm, he added.

"If there is heavy rain in a day or two, we hope the deficit rainfall can be made up," stated Mohapatra. Farmers across the state fear that much less rainfall may hit paddy cultivation.

The India meteorological department (IMD), Bhubaneswar, which had previous stated that Odisha will obtain heavy rain on Thursday and Friday, revised its forecast and stated heavy rain will start from Sunday and will continue till July 12.

"We will keep on updating the rain forecast from time to time," stated IMD, Bhubaneswar, director H R Biswas.

Agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy stated the federal government is prepared to tackle much less rainfall. "We have kept stock of seed varieties, which can be harvested within less duration. We will review the situation at regular intervals," he added.
