Comply with 'No Needle Policy' at Asiad: IOA tells contingent

NEW DELHI: The Asian Games-bound Indian athletes should adhere to the 'No Needle Policy' all over the mega-event in Indonesia, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) steered on Wednesday, pinning the responsibility on the nationwide federations to be sure that the rustic isn't embarrassed.

In a letter to the entire National Sports Federations (NSFs), officers have been advised to be sure that medications prescribed for particular purposes or sicknesses don't contain prohibited substances and the entire syringes to be used are declared to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The missive comes within the wake of the embarrassment that the rustic's contingent faced all over the Commonwealth Games earlier this year. Two Indian track and field athletes - race walker KT Irfan and triple jumper V Rakesh Babu - have been ordered to return home when they failed to give an explanation for the presence of needles of their bed room at the Games Village.

"Medicines should be carried/kept in sealed transparent cover. A copy of the prescription by licensed doctor including details of the medical condition, quantity of medicine, etc should always be maintained," the IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta stated within the letter.

"If any official is required to take insulin or any other intravenous medicines as prescribed during stay at Games Village, they are required to store the medicine and needles in the IOA Office/Polyclinic in the Village," he added.

The IOA's letter is in compliance with the OCA's Medical and Anti-Doping guidelines and 'No Needle Policy' appropriate to the Asian Games.

Under the OCA's "No Needle Policy", no athlete can use injectable materials for clinical treatment that's not vital.

Also, athletes who use medications for valid purposes will have to fill an 'Injection Declaration Form' and furnish it to the chairman of the OCA-Medical Committee & Anti-Doping Commission tomorrow sooner than midday.

Violation of these strict regulations will invite disciplinary motion, further trying out and conceivable sanctions as decided by the OCA Executive Board.

"...whenever an athlete receives an injection - whether it is administered by a third party or by the athlete - during the period of the Games, the 'Injection Declaration Form' should be duly filled out and forwarded to the chairman of OCA-Medical Committee & Anti-Doping Commission no later than next day following such injection at the noon time," an OCA letter to all member countries stated.

All the member countries have been advised to take "all appropriate steps so that all injectable materials are stored in a central secured location, access to which is restricted to authorized medical personnel of the NOC delegations."

"In the event of any conflict between such rules and the present Policy, during the period of the Games, the OCA Executive Board shall resolve the matter."

The sending back of athletes was once not the one embarrassment for India at the CWG.

Before that, the contingent escaped unscathed when a needle was once discovered out of doors a boxer's room. At that point, the CGF had simply reprimanded India for not disposing the syringe as prescribed, clearing the rustic of any declaration norm violations.
