NEW DELHI: Amid talks of simultaneous polls, the Congress on Tuesday dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dissolve the Lok Sabha early and announce common elections along side polls in 4 states where the phrases of the assemblies finish this year.
Congress common secretary Ashok Gehlot stated postponing the approaching state assembly elections and engaging in those with Lok Sabha polls in 2019 is "not possible" beneath the Constitution or the legislation.
He stated elections in Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh must be carried out sooner than the phrases of these assemblies finish.
"There is only one way of holding simultaneous elections. The Prime Minister should dissolve the Lok Sabha and hold polls along with the four state assembly elections," Gehlot advised a press convention.
"The Congress will welcome it. We are prepared," he stated.
Gehlot's comments come an afternoon after BJP president Amit Shah made a pitch for holding elections to 12 state assemblies together with the prevailing 4 along side 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
The former Rajasthan leader minister stated it's going to be in the "best interest of the country to dissolve the Lok Sabha early, given the all-pervasive atmosphere of fear, intolerance and intimidation".
"The Congress will not only welcome an early Lok Sabha election, we are all geared to fight the BJP and eliminate it," he stated.
The Congress alleged that the BJP's intentions behind the 'one country, one election' debate weren't blank.
"Their approach from day one has been wrong. If they were serious, they would have called all political parties for a meeting, discussed ways and means of implementing a proposal and debated solutions for cases where the Lok Sabha or state assemblies are dissolved before their term. But the government did not do any such thing," he stated.
Gehlot stated the 'one country, one election' slogan is just a gimmick to deflect attention of people from government's disasters.
He also stated the BJP was once floating this idea because it fears the shedding of upcoming state elections, by which case it's going to be in an overly vulnerable state to stand the electorate in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress criminal cellular head Vivek Takha stated the birthday party will transfer court if the federal government makes an attempt to postpone upcoming state assembly elections.
"This cannot be done without a constitutional amendment," he stated.
