Formidable opposition alliance can be stitched to defeat BJP in 2019: Chidambaram

KOLKATA: Senior Congress chief P Chidambaram has mentioned that a formidable alliance of opposition events can be stitched together to defeat the BJP and free India from the "reign of fear" in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

Chidambaram, on the other hand, avoided directly answering a query on the leadership issue or who would be the high ministerial candidate of the alliance, pronouncing this is a premature query.

"Let us form the alliance and let the elections take place. All of you want to know the answer even before the script is written," he mentioned.

The former finance minister mentioned an important issue on which all opposition events comply with is that the saffron party should be defeated.

"On that point, there is a convergence of views in many states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, etc. That convergence will bring together opposition parties and alliances will be formed state-wise," Chidambaram instructed PTI in an interview right here.

He mentioned for the primary time, "we are witnessing a sense of fear" among a large section of other folks in the nation.

"The Dalits live in fear, the Muslims live in fear, the women live in fear, the press live in fear," he mentioned.

"We are moving away from the accepted democratic rights and democratic positions. This is a dangerous trend for the country. We wanted freedom (from British rule) because we want to live without fear. And today, a vast section of the country lives in fear and this has to end," Chidambaram mentioned.

Asked whether or not the Congress will reflect the Karnataka type, where in spite of being the biggest party in the Congress-JD(S) alliance it gave away the CM's submit to JD(S) to keep the BJP at bay, he mentioned it's too early to touch upon it.

"Karnataka was a state election. We talked about Karnataka after the election effects have been announced. Now, the foremost challenge is the Parliament election and 8 months forward of the polls, we will be able to't discuss what will occur after election.

"There shall be alliance in each and every state depending upon the context of the state... The alliance must be state-specific. So I believe a powerful alliance can be stitched together state-wise for the Parliament elections," he mentioned.

On reports of sure opposition events like the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Trinamool Congress no longer being very ok with the Congress main the entrance, Chidambaram mentioned it is advisable to wait until the election and the alliance talks to begin.

Several opposition events together with the TMC and the TRS have expressed their reservation about working under the leadership of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, regarded as as a "junior flesh presser".

Asked whether or not the TMC could be part of the Congress-led opposition alliance, because the Bengal Congress unit is not in favour of it, he mentioned, "It's not that i am competent to answer that query. But, I'm certain after I say that each one events who are adverse to BJP and all who are willing to replace the BJP should come together and form the alliance, that is the position I've said. Let's see what happens."

About the possibility of formation of such an alliance before the Lok Sabha polls, he mentioned if one or two events come to a decision to stay away from pre-election alliance, "I'm certain they may be able to sign up for the alliance submit the election".

Criticising the Centre on quite a lot of problems starting from incidents of lynching to anti-romeo squads, Chidambaram mentioned that folks had been both vegetarian or non-vegetarian for centuries, but never ever have been they lynched on the suspicion of conserving a particular meat of their space.

"What is going on is critical erosion of democracy, critical erosion of freedom. This must be stopped in the next Lok Sabha election," he mentioned.

The senior Congress chief mentioned that the Narendra Modi government was trying to undermine the good fortune in turning in a greater economic enlargement all through the UPA 1 and 2 regime.

"You can not disguise the numbers. The numbers speak for themselves. This is desperation of the Modi government to venture itself as better than the UPA government.

"They keep on boasting that in the last 60 years, nothing has happened, but our record is far better than the BJP's," he added.
