Leaders cut across party lines to condole passing of Somnath

NEW DELHI: Leaders across party strains condoled the loss of life of former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. Tributes poured in as information of the 10-time Lok Sabha MP’s loss of life came in on Monday morning. “Sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha and a veteran parliamentarian who had a forceful presence within the House.

PM Modi also condoled Chatterjee’s passing, calling him a “stalwart of Indian politics”. “He made our parliamentary democracy richer and was a powerful voice for the well-being of the deficient and inclined,” Modi mentioned. Veteran BJP leader L K Advani known as Chatterjee “a person of committed beliefs and an inspiration for upcoming parliamentarians”.


Congress president Rahul Gandhi mentioned Chatterjee was “an establishment”, while BJP president Amit Shah mentioned Chatterjee’s long years as a member of the House enriched parliamentary traditions. Former President Pranab Mukherjee known as Chatterjee “an excellent parliamentarian and constitutionalist”, adding that he “remained committed to the cause of other people with a company trust in pragmatic consensus.”


Mukherjee mentioned, “In his death I have misplaced a personal pal & the country has misplaced a perfect son.” CPM, from which Chatterjee was evicted after he refused to toe the party line in 2008, also tipped its hat in mourning the veteran communist. CPM basic secretary Sitaram Yechury mentioned, “He played crucial role in protecting the democratic foundations of our Constitution.”
