"I think it was a great game. Glad to be part of such an exciting Test. Lot of times we came back, showed character there. But England were relentless. They made us work hard for the runs. It sets up the series nicely and gives us what we need to do going forward," Kohli stated after the match.

The captain added, "Our shot variety can have been better. We undoubtedly need to follow ourselves better with the bat, however England came back superbly and we need to take the positives and move ahead.

The 2nd Test starts in Lord's on August nine.

"(I) have not had the time to speak (to the staff) however it is going to be about taking the positives. We may also be happy with the staff for starting like that during a big series."

Kohli praised the lower-order batsman for showing grit and stated India need to be fearless to make a comeback in the series.

"There is so much to be informed from the lower order in the first innings, Ishant and Umesh were given caught in the heart. Ishant showed character right here, Umesh hung round with Hardik once more," he stated.

"There is not any hiding from this game; we need to be certain, relentless and whatever the emotions are would pop out now very quickly. We need to take the negatives out and build on the positives as we pass on."

Talking about his first-innings century, Kohli stated: "From the staff's standpoint, the century was more than likely up there. Second-best to Adelaide. One that I will take note. When you're taking your staff close, it all the time feels good."

England skipper Joe Root credited the bowlers for putting in place the match.

"I am thrilled to bits. It has been an incredible staff efficiency in spite of the usaand downs the credit score must pass to the bowling unit. The easy factor to do is criticise the batters. We knew that if we stayed calm right through, we might give ourselves the best probability to win," he stated.

"We did a good task in staying calm. We made sure we didn't get forward of ourselves and after 3 days of improbable cricket from all sides it offers us a large number of self belief going into the following game.

Root heaped praise on Sam Curran, who blasted a 65-ball 63 in the second innings to assist England post a goal of 194.

"Sam Curran has a great amount of skill, very exciting and promising cricketer. He just didn't seem to feel any sort of pressure with the bat and we just love having him in our side, quite like two Ben Stokes in the side. He is only in his second Test and it is easy to get carried away, but a great prospect for us."
