2007 Hyderabad blast case: 2 convicted, 2 acquitted

HYDERABAD: Eleven years after the Lumbini park- Gokul Chat dual blasts by which 44 persons misplaced their lives and 68 sustained injuries, a local court docket today convicted two Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives- MD Akbar Ismail Chowdhari and Aneeq Shafique Sayeed- in the terror attack case. The court docket will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Monday.

"The court has convicted two of the four accused who were charged in the twin blasts case. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Monday," K Surender, a counsel representing the investigating company instructed TOI.

While convicting Akbar and Aneeq for the August 25, 2007 blasts, the court docket has acquitted the opposite two accused- Farooq Sharfuddin Tarqash and MD Sadiq Israr Shaik, bringing up lack of proof.

In the twin terror blasts case seven persons had been named as accused, out of which three- Indian Mujahideen founder Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal and Amir Reza Khan are absconding.

The investigating companies filed three different chargesheets in connection with the blast circumstances.



The judgement was pronounced through T Srinivasa Rao, the in-charge judge of IInd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. The verdict was given in a unique court docket set up inside Cherlapally prison where all four accused where produced sooner than the judge.


The Counter Intelligence Cell, the investigating company, filed a separate case towards every other accused Tariq Anjum, who was charged for providing safe haven in New Delhi for the IM operatives, following the twin blasts. Judgement towards Tariq is scheduled on Monday.


One of the victim, Sadasiva Reddy's family members demanded capital punishment for the accused. Reddy suffered severe injuries on his legs and fingers, besides speech impairment.
