Hazare to sit on hunger strike from October 2; seeks pension for farmers

RALEGAN SIDDHI: Social activist Anna Hazare will take a seat on a hunger strike here from October 2 over problems like appointment of Lokpal and welfare measures for the agrarian sector, including Rs five,000 per month pension for farmers.

According to a commentary here on Monday, Hazare also sought implementation of the Swaminathan Commission suggestions to relieve the plight of farmers, who have been dealing with critical financial disaster for the last few years.

The government has no longer acted on these calls for regardless of repeated requests, it mentioned.

Hazare has also sought that each and every farmer within the country get Rs five,000 pension per 30 days, an aide of the social activist mentioned.

The 80-year-old anti-graft activist will release the protest at his native village, on the beginning anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Hazare sat on a hunger strike in Delhi in March this year raising the calls for, but had called it off after assurance from the government that vital steps can be taken in this regard.

He had then warned the government about launching the agitation once more within six months if his calls for cross unattended.

"The demand of appointments of Lokpal and Lokayukta for ensuring speedy justice to people combating corruption and assuring transparency in governance and another demand for implementing the (Swaminathan) Commission report have not been fulfilled despite repeated requests to the government," the commentary mentioned.

"As a outcome, Hazare is firm on launching his protest in Ralegan Siddhi," it mentioned.

After the activist's protest at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan in March, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had acted as an emissary of the Centre and had mentioned that the NDA government had taken "positive decisions" in line with the calls for.

The Swaminathan Commission was once formed in 2004 to identify and counsel solutions to issues farmers within the country face. It submitted five experiences between December 2004 and October 2006, suggesting various steps to beef up the agrarian situation.

Hazare, who has been the face of the Lokpal movement, had first long gone on a 12-day hunger strike in 2011 over the Lokpal factor.
