RIO DE JANEIRO: A large hearth tore through a 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro past due Sunday, lighting fixtures up the night and sending huge plumes of smoke into the air.
Firefighters worked to position out the blaze on the esteemed National Museum in northern Rio, which houses artefacts from Egypt, Greco-Roman artwork and one of the most first fossils present in Brazil.
It wasn't right away transparent how the fireplace started.
News portal G1, citing the museum, reported that nobody used to be injured and the fireplace started after the museum had closed for the day. An e mail sent to the museum past due Sunday used to be not right away returned.
Sgt. Moises Torres from the state's firefighting headquarters stated firefighters were given the decision and were dispatched at 7.30pm. He stated there used to be no rapid information about injuries.
In a statement, President Michel Temer stated it used to be "a sad day for all Brazilians."
"Two hundred years of work, investigation and knowledge have been lost," stated Temer.
According to the museum's web page, it has thousands of items associated with the history of Brazil and other countries, and is part of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
