Root first to win all tosses in 5-match Test series in 20 years

NEW DELHI: Winning the toss in the 5th and ultimate Test against India at The Oval made England's Joe Root the first captain in 20 years to win all tosses in the five-match Test sequence. Australia's Mark Taylor was once the ultimate captain to have achieved the unique file in 1998-99 against England.

Root has grow to be the first English and third total captain to win all tosses against India after West Indies' John Goddard (1948-49) and Clive Lloyd (1982-83).


Reacting after losing the toss, Indian skipper Virat Kohli stated: "I think I need heads on both sides. That is the only way I would win the toss."


India made two adjustments of their taking part in eleven, with Ravindra Jadeja replacing undeserving fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari given a Test debut after the vacationers dropped all-rounder Hardik Pandya.


Lala Amarnath and Kapil Dev (each against West Indies) are the other Indian captains to have misplaced all five tosses in a series. Tiger Pataudi stood as lone Indian skipper to win all the tosses which he had achieved long ago in 1963-64 against England.


India have already misplaced the sequence after England won the fourth Test via 60 runs at Southampton to take an unassailable Three-1 lead.
