HANOI, Vietnam: Vietnam's rubber stamp National Assembly has elected Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as the country's president, succeeding Tran Dai Quang, who died closing month.
The 74-year-old Trong is the first to carry both positions since founding President Ho Chi Minh within the 1960s.
Analysts say the merger will not likely change the country's path or financial policies.
Trong, a former chief ideologue of the party, was elected to the Politburo in 1997. He was elected normal secretary in 2011 and re-elected in 2016.
Quang died closing month after combating a viral illness for more than a yr.
