Case dropped against Myanmar journalists facing incitement charges

YANGON: The incitement case towards 3 Myanmar journalists who reported critically at the financial control of Yangon's executive has been withdrawn, their legal professional told AFP Friday, in uncommon excellent news for the rustic's beleaguered press.

Eleven Media's government editors Kyaw Zaw Lin and Nayi Min and leader reporter Phyo Wai Win have been arrested in October but allowed out on bail after a few weeks in detention.

They have been accused of incitement after an article raised questions on budgeting inside the city executive, which is administered by way of Phyo Min Thein, a detailed confidante of civilian chief Aung San Suu Kyi.

Article 505 (b) criminalises published or circulated data that reasons "fear or alarm to the public".

The case precipitated an outcry amid fears of declining press freedom in Suu Kyi's Myanmar and was once lodged weeks after Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been sentenced to seven years on state secrets and techniques fees while reporting on a bloodbath of Rohingya Muslims.

But the legal professional for Eleven Media's staff stated the Yangon executive had despatched a letter to the court asking to drop the costs and absorb their grievance through arbitration at Myanmar's Press Council.

"The judge allowed them to withdraw and gave a verdict (Friday) right away. So the case is finished," legal professional Kyee Myint told AFP.

In an interview on Thursday, on the other hand, Phyo Min Thein told state media town executive would search a correction in the course of the council, and may just resume the legal tack if it was once not satisfied with the result.

"If they do not follow and if negotiation by the press council is not a success, we will continue this case legally," he stated.

Cases towards journalists in Myanmar have further tarnished the recognition of one-time rights icon Suu Kyi, whose legacy fell aside all over the Rohingya disaster.

Suu Kyi has stated little in defence of the Reuters journalists, who can have spent a yr in prison subsequent month. They are interesting.
