Dropping players based on yo-yo test results unfair: Kaif

BHUBANESWAR: Mohammad Kaif does not boast about his claim-to-fame second on the 2002 Natwest Trophy ultimate in England. Mention the phrase 'fielding' to him though and the glee returns to the face of one of the greatest fielders India has produced.

Kaif remaining played for India in 2006. Back then, the sword of the feared yo-yo check didn't dangle over the heads of the Indian cricketers. Today, despite a large number of grievance and the check being seemed by means of some experts as an fallacious benchmark to measure fitness, it's ruling India's training classes.

The effects on the end of a yo-yo check, which comes to working between cones stored 20m apart to fulfill different timed goals, has resulted in players like Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh not being able to make national comebacks.

To Kaif, this is unfair, especially when it happens with players who're performing consistently.

"It's not fair to drop people on the basis of yo-yo test," Kaif stated during his interactive session on the Ekamra Sports Literary Festival in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

The two-day pageant started on Friday in the Odisha Capital.

"This is a skill-based game. Fitness is important but it is being over-hyped. You need to find a balance," the former India batsman stated.

"You need to take wickets, score runs, save runs. You can't do that if you are not fit. So, of course, fitness is important," he reiterated.

Kaif recalled the Beep Test that used to be in force when he used to be part of the national team.

"At our times, we used to take the Beep Test, but nobody was dropped for not passing it. We were given 2-3 months to improve our fitness and meet the desired level of the test without being dropped," he stated.

But the Indian think-tank led by means of coach Ravi Shastri do not purchase that, which reflected in the contemporary phrases of bowling coach Bharat Arun: "The yo-yo test is here to stay." he had stated.
