Gaja victims not getting the attention they deserve, say relief workers

The fresh Gaja cyclone has left a trail of destruction in many districts of Tamil Nadu. Even as rescue operations are underway, Coimbatore has began doing its bit for the sufferers through sending relief and rehabilitation materials to the affected spaces.

C4TN, a group of 60 NGOs in the city, which used to be shaped all over the Chennai floods in 2015, has already sent four vehicles of relief subject material. “We have sent two a lot to Kattimedu (ThiruthuraiPoondi), one load to Sendangadu (Pattukottai) and one load to Keeramangalam (Pudukottai). The biggest problem used to be to achieve these flood-affected spaces as most of the roads are blocked. We have a base station where we're accumulating materials after which supplying it to the sufferers, the use of two-wheelers and tri-cycles. The expenses have shot up this time around because the toll fee has no longer been waived. This used to be no longer the case once we have been sending materials to Kerala flood sufferers and Chennai rain sufferers,” says CGS Manion, co-ordinator of C4TN.

Vignesh Kumar of Coimbatore Bikers Club, who is at Thiruthuraipoondi, supplying relief materials, tells us, “The spaces are marred through protests as the federal government relief has no longer reached them but. Most of the comfort materials sent here are through NGOs and different organisations. And, on account of the protests and roadblock, it took us eight hours to achieve certain spaces. The just right information is that the location is slightly improving day-to-day.”

Food Bank Coimbatore is all set to send its first consignment this weekend. “The public desires to help the sufferers, but they don’t understand how to contribute. We shared the requirements on social networking pages and soon we have been flooded with enquiries. We had been accumulating clinical kits, water, milk powder, rice and dal, bread, biscuits, mosquito coils, candles, lighters, get dressed subject material for children, bleaching powder, gloves, cleansing items to name a few. We have opened assortment centers across the city where relief subject material can also be dropped,” says Vaishnavee Balaji, founding father of the food bank.

However, Manion feels that Gaja sufferers aren't getting the wanted attention. “The inflow of relief subject material is not so encouraging. I believe the emotional attach is slightly much less this time as there are too many distractions like the protests in the affected spaces and the Sabarimala issue. Many aren't aware of the magnitude of the issue. We will proceed to send relief subject material for the following two to three days. Since, there are prolonged power cuts, we'd like sun lanterns, mosquito coils, etc. Rain is expected in the state tomorrow and we will be working on stock accumulation. We are slowly shifting from relief to rehabilitation. We are interesting for utensils, grocery and tarpaulin sheets.”
