Gurupriya bridge under security cover

KORAPUT: The police have intensified surveillance on the Gurupriya and Saptadhara bridges in Malkangiri district suspecting a imaginable strike from Maoists.

"Though the situation is under control, we can't take a chance as the Maoists have been opposing the two bridges and may try to attack it. Hence, security measures have been strengthened in and around the two bridges," SP (Malkangiri) Jagmohan Meena stated.

The two bridges suppose importance for the southern district as the

Gurupriya bridge, which was once inaugurated through chief minister Naveen Patnaik on July 26, connects round 151 villages of the swabhiman house (previous known as cut-off region) with the mainland, while the Saptadhara bridge, which lies on National Highway 326, connects the district with state capital Bhubaneswar.

Police stated a three-tier security blanket has been put up to verify the protection of Gurupriya bridge. While at least six high resolution CCTV cameras and powerful high-mast lights are being put in along the bridge, BSF group of workers are retaining round the clock vigil to steer clear of any incident.

"BSF personnel have intensified operation in and around Saptadhara bridge to thwart any possible Maoist attack," Meena stated, including that apart from routine checkings, long-route combing operations too are being conducted.
