Hisar girls cycle to UT to give green message

CHANDIGARH: A crew of woman scholars and their academics have cycled down from Hisar to Chandigarh to advertise the use of cycles in a bid to avoid wasting the surroundings.

The crew of Vidya Devi Jindal School of Hisar in Haryana contains five ladies (Varnika Gupta, Bhawna Jangra, Vanshika Grewal, Aditi Chugh, Kritika Jindal); 3 academics (Abhishek Charag, Poonam Chauhan, Rupesh Kumar) and a dean, Puja Pant.

The crew's biking expedition to achieve Chandigarh (a total of 350 kilometres) had four stops - Panipat, Rohtak, Kurukshetra and Ambala.

Talking to TOI, the crew shared its enjoy and the challenges it confronted.

"There should be service lanes on the highways for cyclists and pedestrians. The authorities must get in place an efficient traffic lights management process to ensure safety of all. Motorists need to be sensitised about safety of others," Bhawna, some of the scholars, mentioned.

"We hope that more people use cycles to reduce carbon footprint and play a vital role in saving environment," added Kritika, some other scholar.

The scholars added that that they had learnt the significance of operating as a crew. "The pace of such journeys is decided by the fastest and the slowest member. Therefore, it is important to keep motivating each other. The moment anyone shows signs of exhaustion, it is up to others to boost their confidence," Varnika mentioned.

"An escort vehicle that had everything - from food to medical staff - accompanied the girls. Since it was our maiden expedition, the principal was constantly in touch with us," Pant mentioned.

"At the time of starting, the students were very excited but a little doubtful. Their parents, too, were unsure. However, by the time the students reached Chandigarh, they wanted to cycle back to school," the dean added. "It is up to you how you train your mind to pedal faster, longer and harder to keep going," the students mentioned.
