In-fighting affecting us, say Dipa & coach Nandi

NEW DELHI: Indian gymnasts had been struggling on account of the tussle between the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the de-recognised Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI), say best gymnast Dipa Karmakar and her coach Bisweswar Nandi. This fight has added to the doubts over India’s participation on the imminent ‘Individual Apparatus World Cup’ in Germany’s Cottbus from November 22-25.

According to Nandi, the frequent showdown between the SAI and the GFI – the latest one being the sports ministry’s circular barring the derecognised federations (NSFs) from representing India at global occasions – has affected the morale and preparation of the Indian gymnasts.

“There’s indisputably that we're getting hemmed in as a result of there are two federations of gymnastics in India. One, which has Sudhakar Shetty as its president, is affiliated to the global body – the FIG – but the ministry doesn’t recognise it. I believe the two our bodies must call off their variations and work for the betterment of gymnastics. This infighting is affecting the gymnasts,” Nandi said.

Dipa, too, echoed the same sentiments, pronouncing, “Nandi sir tells us to concentrate on our coaching and that’s what we do. But these outside problems do have an effect on me. It’s now not just right for the sport.”

However, the bottom truth is that the selected gymnasts are nonetheless ready to listen to about their commute and boarding/lodging arrangements in Cottbus. India can be represented via Dipa, Aruna Budda Reddy, Rakesh Patra and Ashish Kumar. SAI has refused to transparent the trips of Pranati Nayak and Yogeshwar Singh.

“The basic practice is that SAI first gives the monetary clearance to the shuttle and then does the flight bookings and arrangement for stay. The SAI gives us the receipts of reserving done and we (read GFI) tell the FIG and organisers about it. However, this time a mail from the SAI states that the GFI must proceed ahead with the bills. The GFI can’t do this since we're de-recognised,” a GFI authentic explained.

A SAI supply said the clearance can be provided soon. “If the GFI has this type of large drawback, we can do it on our finish.”

On the issue of gymnasts’ inability to constitute India on the Worlds for the reason that GFI is disaffiliated, the SAI supply informed that the sports ministry could be asked to allow the gymnasts one-time exemption from the rule of thumb.
