Justice Malviya elected BHU chancellor, ends royal dominance

VARANASI: Justice (retd) Giridhar Malviya, grandson of Banaras Hindu University founder Bharat Ratna Pt Madan Mohan Malviya was unanimously elected because the university's chancellor on Monday, breaking the custom of election of royal family members to the office.

Vice-chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar proposed Justice Malviya's identify because the successor of Dr Karan Singh within the BHU court meeting on Monday.

BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said the proposal for Justice Malviya's identify was unanimously supported by way of court participants ending the potential of election.

Justice Malviya said he spent his adolescence on the campus and completed his training from BHU ahead of he began working towards in Allahabad high court.

He termed the advance as a reunion with the institution based by way of his grandfather and taken care of by way of his father Govind Malviya as vice-chancellor.

The election of recent chancellor was being regarded as difficult this time as participants had proposed over 10 names for the office.


Apart from erstwhile king of Kashi Anant Narain Singh, former VCs including Hari Gautam, YC Simhadri and Panjab Singh, some participants had also proposed the identify of BJP MP Murli Manohar Joshi, said Singh.


Until now, most effective participants from royal families were holding BHU chancellor's office.


BHU chancellor is thought of as to be an ornamental place as the person elected for this office heads the BHU court meets and presides over convocations. President of India is the visitor of the central university.
