MANGALURU: Within days of the state’s new round directing all eating places to go totally smoke-free as well as in public places, the enforcement companies have began cracking the whip on violators in Dakshina Kannada district.
The 10-day force which started a couple of days ago has warned a number of eating places and others to set issues right or face the music. Apart from it, it has also asked two hookah lounges in town limits to near down as they violate norms and reason passive smoking, public nuisance and make the ambience noxious to well being.
Dr John Kennedy, High Power Committee on Tobacco Control, Bengaluru, mentioned that the force which was once began few days ago has lined Ullal, Barke, Mangaluru South and North, Pumpwell and Yeyyadi spaces so far. During the time, as many as 300 violations have been reported and round Rs 70,000 in fines was once gathered.
Kennedy added that they found a number of violators who had failed to position the ‘no smoking’ forums.
Further, they have also served notices to all bars and eating place for permitting smoking in their premises. As in keeping with the directions, no bar, pub or identical established order with seating for greater than 30 other folks, may have a ‘smoking zone’ without prior permission. “Every established order has to earmark a smoking zone, but cannot supply furniture or seating preparations as in keeping with The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or Cotpa, 2003. If they do so without taking permission, their licenses will be cancelled,” Kennedy added.
The government will most effective allow a ‘smoking zone’ after thorough inspection from native fireplace services and products, police and civic officials.
Hookah bars shut down
Dr Preetha from the district well being place of job mentioned that below sections 268 and 278 of Indian Penal Code, smoking of hookah is banned due to well being reasons.
In Mangaluru, officials found two such hookah bars working in Ullal and MG Road. “We served notices to those stores and asked them shut down,” she added.
