Brakes fail, trucker helps bus driver navigate slope

KARWAR: When he started his day at paintings on Saturday, little did NWKSRTC driver Okay T Khanapur know that he will have to steer a bus with failed brakes and 40 bizarre passengers down the hairpin bends of Arbail Ghat, close to Yellapur, about 80km from Karwar.
With highland on one facet and a gorge at the other, passengers survived the hectic moments with an unlikeliest assist - Iranna, driver of the fertilizer lorry that was once going in entrance of the bus.

The state-run NWKSRTC bus, connected to the Gadag depot, was once going from Hubballi to Karwar. The vehicle, which left Yellapur bus stand via afternoon, was once at normal pace. But taking place the slope, Khanapur realized that the brakes have failed and the bus was once gaining pace. Now, he had two demanding situations toface - to avoid ramming automobiles coming in the other way and to control the bus from falling into the gorge.

Realising that the driver misplaced the control over the bus, passengers started to panic.

"We realised that the bus will fall into the gorge, which is at least 100-ft deep. All we could do was to pray," stated Praveen, probably the most passengers.

Khanapur, on the other hand, did not lose hope or heart. The only possible assist was once the fertilizer-laden truck that was once going ahead of his vehicle. After swift-thinking, Khanapur urged the bus and rammed the truck, a nudge for assist. After repeated knocks, truck driver Iranna got the message. Iranna took upon himself the duty of navigating the brakeless bus down the four kilometre slope safely. He decreased the tempo of the lorry, which, in flip, acted as a stopper, particularly at sharp curves, serving to Khanapur negotiate the hairpins.

The dare-devil rescue has, on the other hand, dented the entrance of the bus and the rear of the lorry.
