Goa’s eco-fragile islands in crosshairs of tourism assault

PANAJI: Goa’s fashionable islands off the coast, Sao Jorge (St George) and Grande island have already seen some construction in the tourism and defence sectors, but no heavy construction activity. Away from the coast, lack of simple connectivity had saved vacationers largely away from Goa’s unique and idyllic riverine islands.

But now the tourism juggernaut is set to roll heavily into these types of islands and a few extra scattered in other portions of Goa, because the Union cabinet licensed on Friday a discounted 20m ‘no construction zone’ (NDZ) below a new coastal legislation zone (CRZ) 2018.

Scores of water sports activities operators are taking hordes of holiday makers and visitors to the islands off Vasco.

The impact of the unregulated activity - piles of rubbish of every kind – is already being seen. The islands are biodiversity hotspot of coral reefs, shipwrecks and other wealthy biota.

“This is what happens when you've got concretized construction in any eco-fragile islands. The islands have already been suffering from local weather alternate and other anthropogenic stressors and by reducing coverage for coastal areas, the danger is upper of species extinction and in addition lesser resilience in opposition to local weather alternate,” says founder-director, Terra Conscious, Puja Mitra. The organisation focusses on responsible trip and marine conservation.

In the Mandovi basin, Chorao, Divar and Vanxim, amongst seven panoramic islands, would had been rid of their peaceful enviornments long ago if they have been linked by bridges. And but, water sports activities, heritage walks and cruises are laying a toehold right here.

A few years back, an agitation over a resort undertaking with luxury villas rocked the small island of Vanxim, accessed, apparently, best after two ferry crossings.

“It is not just an island but an eco-sensitive space and with biologically active mud flats. The resolution (to scale back NDZ) has been pushed by business pursuits and no longer ecological pursuits,” says Sebastian Rodrigues, a local activist. In Divar, the breached bunds and rising water stage has raised a concern. A water sports activities undertaking, which cleared mangroves to be set up on a bund were stopped by villagers but is being operated once more.

“This reduction of NDZ will affect the mangrove duvet. In an unilateral resolution, the federal government is proposing encroachment on the very areas declared as eco-sensitive areas with out conservation measures,” mentioned former scientist, National Institute of Oceanography, Arvind Untawale.

Environmentalists and villagers are cautious about scary the eco-balance. “We must wait and examine what provisions are made in CRZ 2018 for eco-sensitive areas in CRZ,” Rodrigues mentioned. The leisure will affect native communities dependent on traditional livelihoods and open up extra migration into the fragile islands, says Mitra. “It is healthier to go away them wild and untouched as much as possible to protect those ultimate wasteland,” she concluded.
