Madikeri: A rally in the hunt for executive motion to protect the pristine forests of Kodagu and ensure food safety by saving the Cauvery river were given just right reaction from the people of Kodagu on Saturday. The protest is in opposition to the proposed widening of NH 275 which connects Mysuru and Madikeri.
The protest led by the Kodagu Maraka Yojane Virodhi Vedhike saw masses of members who claimed the project would wreck the vulnerable ecosystem of Kodagu. The rally started at Mans Compound and ended at Gandhi Maidan which used to be decked up with posters for the protest. Many environmentalists from other pro-environment organisations attended the event which used to be inaugurated by Col Muthanna, president, Coorg Wildlife Society.
Suresh Heblikar, environmentalist and Kannada filmmaker who used to be the manager guest, said, “The Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats are in a fragile state. If they are not secure, we is also in for a bleak long run. The Western Ghats are unfold throughout six states and they supply 40% of the country’s sources. How are we able to survive when we stop getting them if the Western Ghats are destroyed? Kodagu’s ecosystem needs to be preserved. We have to save the river Cauvery and folks of Kodagu will have to actively take part in protective the surroundings.”
The president of Kodagu Maraka Yojane Virodhi Vedhike condemned folks supporting freeway project. “People supporting the project are concerned with the sand mafia; they receives a commission commissions in highway initiatives together with the NH project. However, folks must take a robust stand in opposing such damaging initiatives.”
United Kodava Organization convener Manju Chinappa stressed out that individuals supporting the project are doing it for publicity. Cauvery Sena convener Ravi Chengappa said, “We have taken up this issue in court. People hanging hurdles to our reasons will have to be booked by police. We won’t stop our struggle to protect the ecosystem.”
Kodagu JD(S) chief secretary, Padmini Ponnappa said Kodagu does no longer require a four-lane freeway. “Development is needed, but it's not required to this extent. Instead, roads need to be fastened,” she said.
BJP, Save Kodagu forum tackle eco-activists
At the protest, there were slogans in opposition to environmentalists. Numerous BJP members and members of Save Kodagu forum had been seated even ahead of the environmentalists. When they had been asked to depart by police who convinced them to organize a separate rally, BJP members shouted slogans in opposition to environmentalists and confirmed their beef up to the freeway project. They had been escorted out of Gandhi Maidan and the function started.
Meanwhile, the Kodagu Hospitality Association at the side of the Kushalnagar Chamber of Commerce shaped a human chain and protested in opposition to Kodagu Maraka Yojane Virodhi Vedhike at Kushalnagar. They too supported the freeway project.
