MUMBAI: Religion has no role in executive, says Smriti Irani Mumbai, Dec 28. Union minister and BJP chief Smriti Irani Friday asserted that there's no role of religion in executive.
She said the Sabarimala temple factor, where was an issue of national debate after the Supreme Court allowed access of ladies of menstrual age into the well-known hill shrine in Kerala, is being used as a "political tool".
The Union Textiles Minister was once speaking at the 48th version of IIT Bombays annual cultural competition 'Mood Indigo' right here.
"There is no role of religion in government. There has to be a distinction between governence and politics. But, a fine balance between the two can serve the country well," Irani said.
To a question on the raging debate over access of ladies in 10-50 age crew into Sabarimala temple, she said each and every religion and temples have their own practices and the freedom to observe one's own religion is enshrined in the Constitution.
"The Sabrimala issue is being used as a political tool. One needs to study reasonable restrictions in context to the Constitution and not make it a fulcrum of every other debate on equal rights," the minister said.
Asked to comment on the MeToo motion, the minister said kids will have to study to have mutual appreciate for fellow human beings of their rising years.
"Speaking up for the victim is the way forward. A woman just needs an equal opportunity so that she can empower herself," Irani said.
"Let's respect people for being themselves and not judge or punish or humiliate them because their views differ," she maintained.
