Residents protest against Kasba Peth Metro station

PUNE: Kasba Peth citizens on Thursday staged a protest in opposition to the proposed underground Metro station within the area.
Armed with banners decrying the power, the protesters — together with girls and kids — sought the relocation of the station all over a calm, hourlong demonstration at Phadke Houd Chowk.




The protesters said that there used to be no need for a Metro station within the densely populated area and suggested the authorities not to achieve homes to facilitate the station’s construction.

According to the citizens, about 250 families and 30 stores should relocate to make manner for the challenge. “The authorities should believe the feelings of the native citizens,” the agitators said.

Mohan More, a local resident, who coordinated Thursday’s agitation, said the native citizens weren't opposed to the Metro challenge. He said they just don't need the station at Kasba Peth, as it could cause displacement of families. About 250 families and 30 stores might be affected, he said.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro), which is executing the challenge, pegged that number at 197 families and 28 commercial establishments.

“The Metro rail will run from Civil Court towards Kasba Peth. The proposed Civil Court station is within reach. People can easily walk there or even to the next station, which is arising within the Mandai area. There is no need to construct a station at Kasba Peth, which is a completely residential area with out a lot commercial task. In addition, there are previous spiritual buildings within the area,” More said.

The Kasba Peth Metro station is a part of the Shivajinagar-Swargate underground Metro line. MahaMetro has but to start the physical work at the underground stretch.

Suresh Jain, any other resident who also owns a shop within the area, said the station used to be earlier proposed in Budhwar Peth area, however has since been moved to Kasba Peth. “Citizens don't seem to be in favour of the relocation,” Jain said.

Local Shiv Sena corporator Vishal Dhanawade extended his enhance to the protest.
