MUMBAI/THANE: Three firemen risked their lives and rescued a senior citizen couple, Sunita and Balachandra Joshi, from 14th floor of the Sargam Society’s B-wing that was engulfed in flames on Thursday night. Policemen and locals carried the Joshis, each had been aged 72, into an autorickshaw, the first car that came along, and sent them to health center. But unfortunately, each died all the way through treatment.
Officials stated that a crew from Vikhroli hearth station reached the spot first and initiated the rescue operations. “They managed to reach the 14th floor of B-wing, carried the Joshis from their flat to the terrace, moved to the adjacent wing and walked out of the construction safely,” stated an officer. The firemen passed over the couple to policemen and locals serving to in the rescue operations and re-entered the construction to save lots of more lives.
Fireman Chagan Maruti too had to be hospitalised after he inhaled smoke all the way through the rescue operartion. He was discharged after treatment on Friday.
Bipin Maheshwari, a resident, stated: “Most of the residents who rushed out of the construction in panic waited in a public lawn across the road. We saw other people carry injured residents into vehicles and dashing them to health center.”
On Friday, family and friends carried out the closing rites of the couple and Suman Shrinivas Joshi (82). While Sunita and Balachandra had been cremated in Kopri, Suman’s frame was first dropped at her daughter’s position in Mulund (W) and then taken to the crematorium. Suman’s son Sanjay, a senior inspector at Vikhroli police station, was choked with feelings as family and friends offered condolences.
Suman was a nursery teacher at a Mahim college. She had lately retired. A relative stated that her husband Shrinivas managed to escape the fireplace, but she was not able to run and in consequence inhaled an excessive amount of smoke.
Inconsolable relations (pictured) stated Sunita and Balachandra had been a ‘lively, happy couple’ who helped other people in want.
