NEW DELHI: The level is set for the remaining of the meeting elections in 2018 with Telangana and Rajasthan going to the polls on December 7. EVM WITH VVPAT IN A NUTSHELL
* An EVM has a Control Unit and a Balloting Unit in conjunction with VVPAT joined by a cable
* The VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) is an additional unit connected to the EVM, which prints a small slip of paper that carries the symbol, title and serial number of the candidate voted by voter, which is visual for 7 (seven) seconds within the viewing window

HOW SECURE IS AN EVM?
* As a citizen presses a balloting button at the Ballot Unit, the vote is recorded and the device gets locked. Even if one presses that or another button once more, no vote will be recorded. EVMs ensure that the principle of ‘one particular person, one vote’.
* No one can rewrite a program with out damaging the sealed microchip in EVM. So EVM programming cannot be modified to facilitate a selected candidate or birthday celebration EVMs can be taken away and damaged while taking pictures booths.
* For system faults, an officer, answerable for 10 polling stations, carries spare EVMs to exchange out-of order machines .
