Rajkot: Eleven fishing boats have been gutted in a fire that broke out at Veraval port in Gir-Somnath district on Saturday night.
A flying smouldering ember appears to have caused the fireplace. “We are but to establish the burning object that fell into one of the boats. However, when it fell, it triggered off hearth within the diesel drums. The hearth turned into an inferno and spread to the opposite 11 boats, gutting them utterly,” said Tulsi Gohel, president of Veraval Fishermen’s Association.
Gohel added that as the boats have been made from fibre, the fireplace spread abruptly.
“The hearth was reported at 5pm on Saturday. We swung into action when we received a choice. We have been ready to douse the fireplace within the operation that lasted for one-and-half hours and managed to contain the fireplace from spreading to different 30-40 fishing boats,” said an professional from Veraval hearth brigade.
