SURAT: At least 932 persons had been caught inebriated in Valsad district on New Year Eve at different places together with entry points to the state. Majority of the arrests had been made at state’s border verify posts to Union Territories Daman and Silvassa. During ultimate new 12 months police arrested 607 and on December 31, 2016 overall 325 had been caught inebriated.
“Due to consciousness about stricter prohibition laws and proactive actions right through ultimate two years police was hoping that the number of people violating the regulation will scale back but to our surprise it has higher. By arresting a number of drunken drivers we could prevent many accidents,” said Sunil Joshi, superintendent of police, Valsad.
Those returning to state after consuming liquor in private cars had been stopped at check-posts and on being discovered inebriated they had been arrested by police. Buses stuffed with those caught inebriated continued ferrying the accused until early hours on Tuesday. It proved a herculean activity for police to manage the massive number of accused in police station and hospitals when they had been taken for medical exam.
Majority of the arrested had been released on bail by courtroom. Police raided few private premises in Valsad and Vapi the place people had been inebriated celebrating new 12 months.
