Air turns ‘severe’ again

GURUGRAM: After a slight improvement in the air high quality on Tuesday, air pollution degree in the city touched the ‘serious’ category again on Wednesday. Gurugram remained essentially the most polluted city in Delhi-NCR, with its air high quality index (AQI) emerging to 458 on Wednesday from 394 (very poor) on Tuesday.
This is the third day in the ultimate one week that the city’s AQI has crossed the 400-mark. On December 30 and 31, the AQI was recorded at 475 and 438 respectively.

On Wednesday, whilst the city recorded the highest AQI, other cities in Delhi-NCR also reported ‘serious’ air high quality. The AQI was recorded at 430 in Delhi, 411 in Faridabad, 412 in Noida, 455 in Greater Noida and 438 in Ghaziabad.

The AQI in Manesar, alternatively, touched the ‘very poor’ degree and was recorded at 332. The AQI was in the ‘poor’ category in Manesar for per week till Tuesday. At Gwalpahari, the 24-hour moderate of PM2.5 was recorded at 205 micrograms in line with cubic metre.

Emergency measures for the ‘serious’ category are yet to be taken by way of the authorities. Neither the district management nor the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) rolled out any plans up to now.


An HSPCB reliable said the graded reaction motion plan (GRAP) for the ‘very poor’ degree have been enforced already. “Emergency measures for the serious category will also be taken if AQI remains in that degree continuously for 48 hours,” said the reliable.


According to the SAFAR forecast, the air high quality will stay in the ‘serious’ degree for 49 hours. The AQI could be between 450 and 475, it said.


A Met reliable, on the other hand, said the situation would possibly fortify reasonably with an increase in the temperature. “The maximum and minimum temperatures would hover between 23 and 5°C on Thursday,” said a Met reliable.
