BHUBANESWAR: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has engaged native youths as 'Gate Mitras' to prevent injuries and alert commuters about coming near trains at delicate unmanned stage crossings (ULCs).
This is an initiative through Ministry of Railways to reinforce protection and prevent injuries at ULCs gates. The Gate Mitras are also called as gate counselors.
They will recommend the street customers to be vigilant while crossing the ULCs.
ECoR has deployed these counselors at 144 vulnerable places in its zone.
These places include 10 in Khurda Road railway division, 68 in Sambalpur division and 66 in Waltair division.
They will likely be available at the gate round-the-clock dressed in approved dress code (Fluorescent Safety Jackets). They can also record misbehavior and violation of laws through street customers to his senior officers.
The gate counselors can even distribute pamphlets featuring protection instructions to street customers for safely crossing the ULC gates. They are skilled through Railways on the best way to take care of ULCs.
"This deployment of Gate Mitras is a temporary measure as all ULCs will be eliminated in 2018. ECoR has already eliminated 25 ULCs in 2017-18 and will eliminate others by the end of 2018," stated ECoR resources.
