Belagavi district is now Open Defecation Free

BELAGAVI: The Centre on Wednesday accorded Belagavi district the Open Defecation Free (ODF) tag. The announcement was once made at the Twitter take care of ‘Swachh Bharat’, operated via the Union ministry of drinking water and sanitation, congratulating Belagavi district for turning into ODF.

The congratulatory tweet with a picture of the city’s historic Kamal Basadi read: “Belagavi district in Karnataka becomes Open Defecation Free”. The Centre’s announcement follows a long verification procedure. The district management had announced itself ODF on November 19, 2018.


Speaking to TOI, ZP CEO R Ramachandran mentioned prior to declaring a district ODF, the Centre conducts intra-gram panchayat, intra-taluk and intra-district verification but even so 3rd birthday celebration inspection via NGOs or colleges. “The agencies concerned also search clarification on various facets. It’s a hectic process of verification,” he mentioned.


Ramachandra mentioned that the ZP concerned with building of bathrooms since consciousness can't be created without infrastructure. “We have also made efforts in changing the mindset of folks as the problem is all about behavioural alternate,” Ramachandran mentioned.


Belagavi is the state’s biggest district with 14 taluks, 1,208 villages and 33 urban native bodies. The 2011 Census put the district’s population at 48 lakh and the literacy price at 75.4%.
